'allo 'allo

Post by Djuwenda »

Hi there,

I have bvought my first r1 last month. Its a 99 4vx, white and blue in good used condition with 19k and some good service history

it came with new michelins pp3, new complete clutch (basket diaphragm etc), valve clearance, oil change all done in the last 500 miles.

So far I am absolutely in love with
-the engine, sooooo smooth you'd be forgiven for thinking it runs on double cream
-the power delivery, spot on.
-the flickability
-the brakes.

stuff that will need addressing.
-the head seems a little noisy to me?
-original rear shock is still on.
-the forks are stupidly soft. I think they actually bottomed as I was riding down from a high kerb!

So all in all a very happy motorcyclist here with only a few questions coming your way for now.

The first one being

Are there any recommanded spannerists in the Coventry area?

to the hedge and beyond.

Here she is.

the non standard items are
YZFR grips
carbon look bar end weights (the irony... carbon weights??)
carbons fenders and fairing infills
mini indicators on the back
a plate which does not look to be quite the standard size

and for the eagle eyed among you, some tasteful "hand grenade style" anodised valve caps.
to the hedge and beyond.

thanks chaps for the reference for Geoff. He seems like the sort of man I need to speak to.

As for me, I am a 36 year old frenchman, been riding for about 10 years now.
I used to ride kwaks, spent a little bit of time at the nurburgring with Brendan of sliders fame. Chatting with him and Andy Carlisle develloped an interest for the R1 as these bikes have long been the reference around there.

I assume both Andy and Bren are regulars on this forum?

other than that, I am your average narrowboat dwelling, real ale loving, tweed wearing Frenchman .

Welcome to the mad house Xavier....... I bet you know your onions :P

You have come to the right place to find info about your R1 the guys on here really do know their R1 onions. Us Brits have a rather acquired sense of humour which some of our European friends don't always understand, but saying that, as you live over here, you must have a sense of humour.

As Colin says join in the banter, enjoy your R1 and your narrow boat

So welcome :P

Ah, I just assumed they would be regulars here.

Bren aka the baron of the nurburgring of performance bikes fame?
http://www.slidersguesthouse.com/about.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Andy Carlile as in https://rideapart.com/articles/crashed- ... ing-record

These guys only ride R1's on the ring and they are the ones who really made me want one I suppose.

Thanks for the welcome, despite a couple of fast acquaintances, I am not fast myself. just your average road rider.
I think the fastest I ever was was when I had my first bike a zxr400. I could ride that thing to its limits.
But now I am riding more powerful and better bikes, my skills seems to have decreased in proportion.

As for the british sense of humour, I should be able to cope, despite my unlucky start in life. :violin:

Xavier , you are fitting in perfectly , just make sure you give as good as yiu get.

The vast majority of us on here can't ride an R1 to its potential, so yiu are not on your own buddy, infact ive got slower as I've got older . Enjoy your R1 and the forum

in my case, the older I get, the faster I used to be...

and to be fair, unless your bike lives on the track, you'd have to be a psychopath to exploit the full potential of an R1 on the road.

thanks for the welcome fellas.

welcome buddy from another old but newbie.
nice r1,i had the blue 98 s reg back in the day,2000.
ive also just re entered into ownership of the best bike i ever owned and it isnt dissapointing me.
are you sticking with the blue flame can?hows it sound?
just ordered a gp can for mine, along with a few bits like black swingarm bobbind and bar end weights
to do away with the blue anodised tatt thats been fitted to it (blue on a red bike i ask ya :naughty:

also ordered a new set of aluminium front and rear paddock stands,to help clean the polished rims.
fantastic bikes and more than enough for our roads.
