New owner

Post by Bandit_287 »

Evening,

Just picked up an 09 R1 in Matt and gloss black. One owner from new and 7600 miles on it with full history, it's got some lovely bits on it too. So far I'm loving it, the power delivery is so different to my 04 Blade. Looking forward to learning lots from this forum.

Paul.

Welcome to a great forum

You are the owner of a bike a million miles away from the Blade, take ya time ask loads and enjoy an epic different superbike.

Honda = turbo charged pipe & slippers

Yamaha = The devil smoking dope, sniffing coke and gettin it on with the neighbors daughter 8-)

Welcome to our place ;)

Thanks for the welcome, not sure how to post pics but I'm sure you all know what a black and gold Big Bang R1 looks like. Jompy how would I know if it's been flashed and what does that mean?

Paul from what i know about flashing & from what other people have said "flashing" is where the ECU is remapped , all the emissions settings that stiffle the motor are taken out , the main benefit of this is it makes the bike much more civil at lower speeds & in town riding , it stops all the on off jerkiness of the throttle & the hunting . Of cause the bonous to this is usually a power increase . i believe and someone will correct me if i'm wrong you can have the bike set up how you want so you could have more midrange for on the road or more peek power for the track .
as said i'm only going on what other people have said , for more info have a look here

Okay thanks. So similar to a custom map on a dyno with a power commander then? I had all that done to my Blade and it made a significant difference. So can the standard Yamaha R1 ECU be re-mapped? That would save the expense of installing a power commander. As far as I'm aware my bikes not been flashed but I guess it's difficult to tell without communication with the previous owner. It rides very well and pulls like a train-loads of torque compared to the Blade, I haven't even tried it in A mode yet. I have to say I absolutely love this Big Bang engine, it sounds amazing with the twin Yoshi's, you can't help blipping the throttle in traffic.

You'd have to talk to Mike about it but I'm sure the way to tell the early flashes is that when you turn the bike on it starts in A mode instead of B mode , because flashing is opening the ecu there's supposed to be a lot more settings you can change , you be best off getting to grips with the bike first & then seeing if you need a flash .
To have the bike put on a dyno & flashed it's around the £300-350 Mark but if you go have a look at the link I posted above you'll see that Mike does a mail order flash service for around £150

doesn't include a map though I don't think since the software/hardware change

To be honest the bike seems to ride fine and I'm happy with the power delivery, I've not really opened it up properly yet as I seem to keep running out of road lol. I'm really not interested in flashing it anyhow, I've ordered up some nice Asv's and a smaller plate and would like to replace the amber indicator lenses to clear if anybody knows where to get them? Maybe in the future I'll get a PCV and a custom map but I'm in no hurry at the moment.

Welcome to the forum Paul, as clarky says, great name, my middle name is Paul :) but I'm not related to Dave aka petepassion, or whatever he is calling himself today. He hasn't been Daphne fir a while.

This is a great firum, peeps friendly and have a great sense of humour.

Going on from what Jompy said, or monkey face as he is known, your bike should start in the STD mode then flick to A mode and then flick to B mode. B mode isn't very good, it's like eating a sweat with the wrapper on. A good flash it PCV with custom map should make the STD modde like the previous A mode and the new A mode is just mentally mental. A flash or PCV and custom map is recommended, the fly by wire throttle can be very twitchy around town , it's fine on track or when you are going for it, but at slow speeds it can feel like yiu are fighting the bike all the time.

Anyway, as you said, the soundtrack is intoxicating ..

So welcome to the forum

Cilla :)
