After a history of crossers when i was younger, at the grand old age of 26 i bought my first road bike a vfr400, no pics of it just now as on my knackered hard drive.
A couple of years later in 2008, i had learnt enough on road to move up and was looking for an r6, when i stuck in a cheeky bid on an 5pw r1 and won it for less than 3 grand.
I dont take many pics, so here are some when i got it.
It came with a huge akrapovic can, flush smoked indicators, tail tidy, integrated rear indicators in rear led light, smoked screen, dzus quick release fastners and a sprint steering damper.
Here is a pic from a few years back on a trip to skye, which melted through my tyre, and i had o run on canvas back to north of inverness on a sunday to get a new tyre!

Since i have had it i have added the following:
Power commander III without a custom map yet...
Ohlins steering damper with harris bracket
K&N filter
Gp style bottom exit exhaust, and cut down the akrapovic a little too
Vented carbon front muduard
Carbon rear hugger
Chinese Stubby brake levers
Shark fin front discs, the rear was too thin and had some micro cracking so swapped for a wavy disc
Acumen gear indicator
Scotoiler
R1 yoke cover
R1 heel guards
R1 bar ends
Crash bungs on front and rear wheels and 2x bungs on frame
Rear peg delete for a clean rear end
Led rear indicators in light unit (much brighter)
I haven't really done any mods to it for a few years, just ridden it! If i keep off the forums, I won't end up like my cars and get lots of ideas!
Future plans are
Custom headlight, with xenon projectors and angel eyes
I have some braided hoses waiting to be fitted and a well needed fluid change. Any recommendations on fluid?
The first service i had i took it to the closert dealer, Duffus in Kircaldy, but it broke down on the way home, one of the few times, and they were pretty unhelpful at getting it going, thankfully a passing guy stopped, offered me tools, an allen key got me in under the seat and i found a loose connection, top tip is to keep an allen key for your seat in the rear if you dont carry tools!
Since then i have taken care of servicing myself, basically tyres when needed, brake pads, oil and filter every year. I really need to have a look through my haynes as to what else i need to do, brake fluid and coolant change coming soon though. If anyone has a rear brake line guide for sale let me know, mine has broken (i bolt onto the swingarm) Any suggestions for maintenacnce welcome!
Other bits i have done are a new chain and sprockets, regret not getting a gold chain but was part of an oem kit (my chain broke first run out after winter storage even with an oil. Changed battery and plugs as needed. the only bit that failed on me was the stator last year, just after my oil change which was a bugger! But was pretty easy to do with an impact wrench.
Joined the forum to have a look into some other mods and get some advice.
Things i need to read up on are the Airbox mod, what Velocity stacks do, and i guess these need a remap, so should do it all together.
Another thing is suspension settings, i have never touched them, and happy with the way it handles, I just dont know if i start messing whether i will screw up what I am comfortable with. It always feels better than my mates bikes, it is fully standard, but their bikes are usually pretty different so not a great comparison, maybe i can hopefully try an r1 on ohlins or similar. Also need to do some reading about th ais delete, not really sure what it does/pros/cons of it. Any other good mods please let me know.
My bike is no garage queen, but it is pretty clean apart from a couple of scratches on the rear from luggage and a slightly chipped rear seat cowl. i always plan to respray it every winter, just never do it! Just noticed this weekend on a run to lochearn that my chain guard has a crack, but spotted some nice black aluminium r1 marked ones on ebay from china, so will be my next mod as they are cheaper than used oem ones.
I do ride the bike pretty hard, i really love it, and there is not much else i would go for without spending thousands. It costs me about £150 to tax insure and mot it every year, along with some oil, and I have probably lost very little in depreciation, best bang for the buck ever! I want to get a track session booked at knockhill this year too, see how i get on. think that'll do for an introduction!
