4c8 not starting

Post by BlitzR1 »

Dear friends,

Yesterday I took out bike for a spin and bike started perfectly. Left the bike running on stand and came inside house for literally 2 minutes. When I came back out noticed my son on bike and before I could stop him he revved it.

He by mistake put the bike in gear whist sitting on it, luckily as the bike was on stand, it didn't move.

Bike was still running when I sat on it and as soon as I tried to ride, it stalled.

Bike did not start again. I thought the battery is gone flat and when I charged with my car it started fine. Went for a spin, came back, switched it off and the bike did not fire up. Symptoms as if battery flat, today called AA to charge the battery and the guy said that nothing is wrong with the battery, its showing 12+ volts and amps is like 100+ when trying to manually charge. He also said that the amp is too high.

At ignition in start more, all lights lit up but as soon as i try to start they disappear and appear again.

He also said its more than likely that the starter motor has a defect.

Bike is 2007 with 12k on clock.

Any idea to what has gone wrong with it?

Thank you in advance.

Its most likely the battery, especially if its the original one they are VERY prone to failure, charge it and then come back with the results. 4C8 starters are very reliable ;) but faults do happen. I am guessing all the wiring to the battery and starter solenoid are tight

Thank you PJC,

Battery I changed from original almost a month back. And below is what the AA mechanic had on report.

"Non starter, starter motor clicks Bar @ 13V.

Drops to 6V cranking.

Suspect starter motor seized

Engine seems to turn over in gear ok".

*****

If I bring my bike in diagnostic mode, you think the diagnostics would display the error code?

Further to above, you think it could be either loose terminals on battery? or could be faulty solenoid? I read on a post where if I touch a screwdriver simultaneously on the two bolts attached to solenoid, the engine should spin and if it does then its the stater motor! Do you have any opinion on this?

Thank you in advance.

The point you made saying when the starter is pressed the lights go out points towards the battery, what happens if you put her in gear (3rd) and bump the bike

Shorting the solenoid should be a last resort IMO

Will it still jump start using the car battery?

Yes not a good idea as per few expert bloggers.

Yesterday too, the AA guy tried to jump start using this van battery whist running and I think if its true what all say then he definitely has damaged it further. The AMP shooted up to 115 when I tried to start.

Yeah, I've heard that too but am not exactly sure why. Main thing is that the engine in the other vehicle should not be running.

When I was having charging problems with the 4xv, I had my newish battery tested. The CCA was about 250 amps, which would start most car engines!

Due to having a battery draining alarm on mine I often 'jump it' using the car batt as a slave- no engine running - quick tap of the starter and she fires quickly every time :)

Good evening,

I tried to bump start the bike in 3rd gear and it did not start, not even engine turning.

However, I ran diagnostic and various codes appeared.

d01: 15
d02 & d03: 102
d05: 16
d06: 18
d08: 0.6
d13: 14
d14: 16
d15: 15

Can someone please help me what these are? I am totally oblivious to these numbers and what these are referring to.

Thank you in advance.

I have checked the manual and under IGNITION CIRCUIT CUT-OFF SYSTEM, it suggests the following:

"It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the sidestand is moved down".

In my case, the engine was running, sidestand was down and my son revved the engine engaging the bike in 1st gear. I have therefore come to conclusion that its the ignition circuit mal-functioning...

This leads me to Ignition Coil unit!

This is only my theoretical analysis as I don't have much of mechanical understanding of my bike.

Can anyone kindly share their opinion of this?

Selecting a gear with the stand down should cause the engine to cut out. Are you sure that your son actually put it in gear?

If the bike was fine before, then it's most likely that something your son did has caused the problem.

It might pay to download the manual and work your way through the fault finding procedure.

I know this is really really daft, but could it be a faulty side stand cut out switch, I remember a few years ago mine got clogged in chain lube, through a rather over enthusiastic use if chain lube over many months, and that gave me starting problems, it was on a Honda though

Could the side stand cut out switch have been damaged?

I was actually trying to figure out what my son may have done that caused this malfunction.

Bike started at a click, i left it running...all I heard was a bike being revved and son coming off the bike. I sat on, and as soon as I pulled the bike it stalled as it was in 1st gear. I brought the bike in neutral but it never started. Jump started with car and fired quickly. Went for a round came back and bike did not start.

Now when I switch on the ignition key, all lights appear and as soon as I push start, they disappear and a noise like a whistle come but this is like engine starting, low to high note but not too high. But as soon as I release the push start, all lights appear again.

See the diagnostics never highlighted Side Stand Switch code, instead its throwing Ignition Coil codes...

I think the bike needs to go in a garage....

Guys,

I just remember something else as well.

When I used to switch on the bike with key, the bike used to engage, and then at times it never disengaged, same noise used to carry on...

I then used to start the bike. Most of the times it used to disappear and some times the noise carried on in background.

Any idea what this noise could be of? Could this have worsen and caused the problem?

Thank you,

Could be EXUP Servo also.

On my bike its been disconnected but an eliminator not added to rectify its malfunctioning.

Or worse case scenario fuel pump. Looking at the mileage of my bike 12k, fuel pump should malfunction actually. But then again!!

Its been booked in at Blackdogs for Friday.

From reading above, I'd have put my money on it being a faulty crankshaft position sensor. Good luck with it, I'm sure it won't be an expensive fix whatever it is.
