Newbie! But second R1

Guys,

New here. Just picked up a 2002 registered 5JJ in superb original condition (even has the reflector on the uncut rear mudguard!). And its a blue one! Miles are high, but its a two previous owner bike, and the second owner has known it from new. And both owners were engineers. And I paid peanuts for it by R1 standards.

Needs tyres and a service. But thats all. I'm going elsewhere for tyre advise, could be a long and oftern repeated thread!

I owned a 1999 4XV between 2003 and 2004 which I should NEVER have sold. Used to run D207s on that it was so long ago. Haven't owned a road bike for 9 years :naughty:

And I agree with the journalists - the 5JJ is definitely less hooligan than the 4XV which at my age is no bad thing ....... :D :D

no need to tell you not to use the stated torque setting for the sum bolt then lol
Tyres do get mentioned a lot on here have a look around , i ride a 4xv & clarkey has a 5jj & we both agree that the original pilot powers are a good compromise of latest greatest pose factor sticky tire to wallet pain . . . . . . ok we're both tight fuckers but the powers work :lol:
Seing as you've ridden both the 4xv & 5jj would you say the main difference ( not on about the body work :P ) is that the 5jj has midrange which means that you don't notice the 8-9000rpm punch so much that you get on the 4xv ?

Welcome aboard Alex - enjoy ur new bike pal, just in time to have some summer fun - mines a 2002 reg'd blue 5jj - fucking great value 2-3 grand & I'm still leaving me bud on his flashy 5 grand gixxer thou round tha twisties - get stuck into the forum pal cos you'll get more out that way & don't forget to get some piccys up when ya can as we're nosy fekkers on here ;) :)

The bike is fitted with Diablo Rosso Corsas. I'm thinking of trying the Diablo Sport - I'm unlikely to be doing track days or setting records, and I'm doing my tight Yorkshire piece! £230 vs £155.

Completely agree with your observation - the mid range power makes the 5JJ far more linear. It''s still a total weapon, but doesn't have the more manic power band at 8k rpm, or at least is less pronounced. Also, I definitely notice the taller 1st and 2nd gear ratios.

I was actually hunting for another 4XV but the values are starting to climb, and my budget was limited. I advised my wife that I was buying the bike about 20 minutes before I did, so careful mediation was required, and compromise!!! The 5JJ remains a beautiful machine, and very close to the 4XV (more so than than the 5PW), and therefore represents a good compromise.

It has done 39k, which is high, but I am not put off by that. The engine is sweet, and they are very strong, and its been serviced regularly. And it is in beautiful beautifil condition (and I am fussy) and I paid only £1750.

I am tempted to fit an Akrapovic Road can I have to admit. They really enhance the look! Other than that, it will be left well alone.

My elder lad was trying to get me to fit small indicators and cut the mudguard down within minutes!

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a good buy and you've even got the best colour!

My 4xv has done about 45k miles and runs well. If it's been maintained well and not abused then yours should be fine. The most common prob seems to be jumping out of 2nd gear.

Lots of help here so ask away. If you want to save on tyres then maybe try modern ST tyres like the Angel GT.

Definitely the best colour. As we all know, the blue ones are faster!

I'm not worried by the mileage. It's definitely not been abused.

By ST I meant sport touring. I haven't tried the Angel GT myself but the reviews are always very positive.

I have had the Diablo Rosso Corsa on another bike. They are a great tyre, but wear fairly fast.

£1750 . . . . . . i'll have two lol , what a bargain :clap:
to be honest i love the the usable midrange the 5jj gives , it makes it a lot more user friendly , if you are missing the madness of the 4xv try fitting the 4xv carbs onto your 5jj as i'm sure thats where the difference is ;)
If standard is your preference then the only things i would change are the can & put on a decent set of aftermarket levers , see Ebay ( watch for fakes ) or Titax are £120 a pair new also you could buy a cut up standard mudguard/undertray that you can hake to pieces that would alow you to fit an aftermarket undertray & you'd still have the original on to go back on ;)
i take it that it's already got a steering damper on it !
Nope my 4xv isn't standard as Einstein ( Clarky) says but i do love it ;)
As for pics to post off a puter get your self a free photobucket account & follow the idiots guide (worked for me :) )
you can also post pic's from your moblie using the tapashite app (Tapatalk) i find it wank for browsing the forum but really good for uploading pic's direct from my mobile !

I had contemplated replacement levers, so thanks for the advice - some on eBay do look a tad cheap and nasty!

Plant to leave it standard otherwise. Will try and get pictures posted soon.

Welcome to the forum Alex, nice looking R1 you have there. Don't listen to Jompy r turning it into a street fighter, he is always monkeying around that one.

39k miles is not high if the bike has been looked after and with the two previous owners being engineers I bet they did look after it. I got over 65k trouble free miles out if my first R1, that was a 5vy

Welcome in. I have a very very clean 5jj but in the faster red. Mine has just turned 28k on the clock. I've had it for a couple of months and gave a lot more for it than you gave for yours so you certainly had a bargain.

Spotted a mod though - the pillion pegs have been removed and a custom exhaust hanger fitted.

I'll bet there's more...

I have the originals! And the original pillion seat!

Well spotted!

The exhaust hanger is, I believe, an aftermarket part but made by Yamaha.

I did spot the pillion seat but thought maybe the 5jj seat was different to the 4xv.
