Newbie needs help PLEASE!!!!!

Post by Yamster »

Hi all
Sorry to put first post up as a negative but I'm getting desperate! This is my second R1 my first was the first 4xv and a beauty. My second is the 04 model which again is a beauty. BUT! Since I've had her (2 months) the bike keeps stalling on me. Now I know about the dreaded stalling probs which have been well documented so I checked mine out with local Yamaha dealer in Exeter (Bridge) and low and behold my 04 R1 hasn't had the TPS recall. So I booked it in and had it done yesterday BUT on riding back yesterday the bike is exactly the same, Stalling and rough idle at low speed. Please Please can some of you 04-06 riders help me. Thank You

Welcome to the forum Peter, sorry to hear if the issues you are having with your 5vy. When I had issues with mine back in 2005 the TPS wasn't causing the bike to stall rather the engine would cut out whilst I was riding the bike, which was quite unsettling when I was flying along in the outside lane of the M6 ..... That happened quite a few times and I believe it was my experience that caused the recall. Anyway that aside, I remember when the engine had died when I pressed the starter button nothing at all would happen, the bike was completly dead. However when I switched the ignition off fir a few seconds, switched it back on then the bike would fire up. I had this problem for months and I'm sure my dealer didn't believe me until they took the bike fir a day and the mechanic sh@t himself when the same thing happened to him on the M6 , the bike got a new TPS and was fine.

So is your bike stalling or cutting out? I mean to stall a bike it's generally when you are starting off and letting the clutch out, when my bike was cutting out she was in gear and we were riding along not just starting off or changing gear.

Regarding the rough idle does the bike have a power commander fitted or has it been flashed and does it need a re flash or new map?

I'm not very technical so forgive me, can a stiff or sticking EXUP valve cause idling problems?

Sorry that's about the extent of my knowledge, hope it helps

Oh my 5vy did over 65,000 miles and Yamaha did say the TPS problem only affected certain high mileage bikes..... How many miles has yours done?

Welcome and good luck

Stephen

Hi yamstar. Need a bit more info mate. Are you running a power commander ? What have you ellininated as possible issues. Ie plugs ? Coils?, kinked fuel lines ? Balancing done? Compression test?

Sounds more like a fuel control problem to me.
As mention above does it have a power commander or have you had the ECU flashed, or has it been done before you bought it?.

It might be worth sending your ECU to Velox racing for a flash .

My 4C8 was doing the same thing but I changed the ECU for a De restricted ECU and it stopped doing it so a remap/ flash might be the way to go for you

Send R1mike a PM he owns Velox racing and will give you a price.

im thinking you cant flash an 04 model to adjust the fuelling just the 07 onards, its either an incorrectly fitted TPS or the throttle bodies need balanced like the lads said or believe it or not your battery is on the way out, if you have access to a good battery change that and see if it works
Do not confuse my personality with my attitude. My personality is who I am. My attitude depends on who you are............

You can map the 5vy and the 5pw but you only get the same gains as fitting a PC so most just fit the PC

Thank you so much for your help. So is it true that I could rectify the stalling problem by fitting a PC?

Mike said "Flash Tune" don't support the 5pw & 5vy but they aren't the only people that map ECU's bud
