Newbie in east anglia

Hello All,

Currently a non owner of a Yam but that shouldn't last long.

I have a ZX9R which I've had for 4 years but have been hankering for a new bike for a while now. Had a test ride of most of the new bikes inc the new GSXR, RSV4 RF, 1299 S and the R1. Until Saturday the GSXR was the pic as I could not get why the Italian stallions were £6k more. But then I tried the R1 on Saturday and was blown away.

It has to be the best handling bike I have been on so I am pretty well decided that is the way I will go. Not badly priced also, but I will say would have expected a quickshifter for a £15k plus bike, even if it was up only. But Its a toy I suppose if you aren't a racer so I will get on fine with out it.

The ZX9R was bought as it was big and comfortable but I am after something a bit more challenging now. I have also spent far to much time doing stuff to the bike instead of riding it so I woudl rather get a more complete package now. I think some adjustable rear sets and an Akrapovic silencer will finish it off.

A bit about me, well I'm a QS based in Suffolk. I love my motor racing whether its 2 or 4 wheels and will often be track side not just in front of the box. I am a fair weather rider but hey, no ones completely perfect are they.

Hope you get to know you all and have some laughs whilst badgering you for advice when I try to do something and balls it up.

The R1 does have a quickshifter(up but no down shift blipper) if you tried a 15k+ bike for sure.

The latest R1 does come with a quick shifter so maybe the one you rode was disabled via the software?

I think you need to have a bloody good read in the 2cr/2ks section before you decide on a zorst especially if your think about a de-cat . Cracking first post , I'm sure you'll enjoy the forum/community

Cheers all, and thanks for the info on the QS. The garage I had a test ride has only just switched from April ia to Yamaha so I suppose I can forgive them for not knowing there is an up QS. Any pointers on how to check this? Was a 2017 euro 4 bike. The ape had a button to press to engage the QS, is it similar on the R1?

That is a very tidy bike and I did look at the used route but with PCP so cheap it seal silly not to get a new one. Gets a bad rep PCP but it is a good way as long as u plan for the payment at the end.

That'll be the Mototechniks then, I have a mate that works there there. I think your comment about the QS shows they are very new to Yamaha. The mechanics are apparently ok. The only issue I have is that because they swapped brands they have only just started doing Yamaha training courses so aren't up to scratch as fully trained Yamaha technicians.

There is nothing to do to engage the QS just ride and change up without the clutch, or change up as normal with the clutch

That's the one, I know Martin from their. They were very honest either me and even said that they are still learning the systems and how it works.

Cheers for the heads up on the QS. Looks a better system than the ape, having to press the button on the handle bar means I might as well use the clutch. 1-0 to the Yamaha.

As Boz said just use like a normal QS on up changes, I'm no bothered about downshifters, I can blip the throttle myself t very much lol, love mine , ive gon for an Arrow exhaust ,orgasmic noise lol, oh and get it flashtuned and decatted , speak to Mike on here at Velox Racing, superb service.

As PJC says it doesn't matter what you ride here . A bike is a bike is a bike, I've always wanted a Kawasaki but never owned one, ridden my mates loads of times though and it was a great bike.

You will love the new R1, it's an amazing machine, it's like an R6, light and flickerbal but with the power of a litre bike, and that power is delivered in such a controlled way, it's amazing [emoji3]
