Back again, again, again ? Hey lads :)

Some of you if you've been here a while may recognise me...

I think this is now my 7th R1,

The 3rd 5VY, i've had a 4XV, 3 5JJs and a 5PW.

Today being my 10th wedding anniversary I thought I'd shock the hell out of Mrs Weeksy.

She turned up at Pembrey today and I was out lapping on this!

She was bemused as she couldn't find me

It's a mirror image of the one we owned previously yes, but with lower miles on it. It all started on the way to Folkestone 3 weeks ago, me and MRs Weeksy were chatting about motorbikes and she came out with "Oh i really loved that R1, it was brilliant, can't believe we sold that..."
As stated above it was our 10th wedding anniversary on Friday, so i put the plans in motion to get the R1 that she loved and shock her with it on our anniversary.

I've lost count of how many emails i exchanged with the dealer throughout France and Italy, questions from them, questions from me and one morning i snuck out for a coffee, called the dealer to pay them a deposit on the bike and the deal was finalised.

Fri morning i set of early "GiantPygmy needs a hand loading the bikes, so i'm shooting to his before Pembrey"... Of course, i wasn't, but Pygmy was in on the deal so that worked nicely.

I got to Thunder Road Motorcycles in Cwmbran, we eventually struck a deal on the ZX6R and i came away with it.

I got to track and Mrs Weeksy was still 45 mins away, but i wanted to check/test the bike before she got there just to make sure it was all OK for the next day. I was really pleased to find that i quite liked it out there, the power, handling, performance etc, all really nice. I'm not really a sportsbike person now, but it was proper nice... and proper fast.

Mrs Weeksy was standing with couchie watching the bikes lapping round but bemused how she couldn't see me on the ZX6R as Couchie had told her i was testing/checking the bike... So Couchie thought of plan B, "maybe he's taken it out on the road", but MRs Weeksy went over and asking the gate marshall if she'd let out a ZX6, which of course she hadn't.... Mrs Weeksy was worrying.

I pulled in on the chequered flag and Mrs Weeksy was walking back towards the van, i pulled up next to her on the R1 and flipped open my visor.."So, i've got something to tell you"....

The rest as they say, is history. She spent 6 happy sessions on it yesterday, getting used to it and getting some mighty impressive lean angles. We got the suspensions set up by Kev from Phils team, he's also the crew chief for Jakob Srmz, so clearly knows what he's doing etc. The wife was happy with his changes, but we may make it just another click or to stiffer next time.

The bike itself isn't quite perfect, but damn it's very very close, with an afternoon/evening or two of cleaning, it will be even closer, just the bits that people miss, will get the fairings off it, get the exhausts off it too as you can't get to the undertray area easily..

It will soon have pride of place in the garage, i've just got 4 tonnes of things to get out of the van too !

Thought i'd do a little bit of looking on how clean (or not) it is under the usual stuff. Only started with the tank. The cover comes off after about a bazillion little bolts/screws, mostly because when bikes are polished you get the overrun of polish which gets between the 2 layers and leaves the white residue.

Under the tank etc is absolutely spotless ! Properly nice. I've given the tank a clean with a clay bar/spray and then a quick layer of polish. It's come up LOVELY.... but i'm not sure if the camera really does it justice on the colours !

Bit more on the first cleaning... This is going to be a long on-going clean for 3-4 weeks i rekon. But we'll get there.

While removing all the seat unit and gubbins last night i did notice a minor issue, one of the panels has a crack/split. Sadly it's this one

Which is the biggest ball ache on the planet to swap. It's going to be at least 1-2 hour job to replace it. Exhausts off, all the tail unit bits, lights, indicators and 300 little push clips and various fastners.

Happily i picked up an immaculate one on Ebay for £35.

I certainly never noticed it when purchasing, but you'd honestly have to go over the whole bike in massive depth due to where it was etc.... It won't be a job for tonight that's for sure... but it will get done in the coming weeks.

This was the back end once i whipped the wheel out. Sure, it could be argued it's far from terrible.

The chainguide was removed, sprocket off etc, footrest removed on the chain side which then meant i could give the swingarm both inside and outside a decent clean. Cleaned the chainguide and the hugger, cleaned the footrest up and then the wheel along with the chain.
Brake caliper and line was sorted out, a set of captive spacers were fitted and away we went, all back together.

More messy stuff now after an early start>early finish in the office. If you don't like OCD levels of cleaning, you may as well walk away from the thread.

Sprocket cover, fairings, engine, shock, front of swingarm etc etc. Ideally it would be a removal of the shock, but i don't have the time/inclination currently and i've got 95% of the mess off both the shock and the linkages etc. Sprocket cover cleaned out, the hoses all cleaned. The radiator needs a decent clean but that can be tomorrows job. V-piece cleaned up and then all the bits back together. Still left the fairing off at the moment as the lower section is in soak of polish to get the final bits of spray/dirt off it. Forks given their first bit of a clean along with the brake hoses, but they'll get finished later in the week once it's all back together on the fairings and sorted out etc.

Up to now i've still not found anything that troubles me on the bike which is absolutely excellent, sure, it has some wear and tear, but it's 7000 miles on the clocks and 13 years old..

Calipers have been stripped and cleaned, pistons, retaining pin, spring plate, calipers themselves and the r-clips, now all looking good. Pads have tonnes of meat on them so all good there too.

Only downside of the day is that i don't see to have a Torx T40 in the right size ratchet setting so can't whip the disks off to clean the wheel properly.

Just need to grab the torque settings for the caliper bolts and it's golden.

Minor irritation was the crap around the bottom of the fork leg/lower where it sits behind the mudguard. Simply, because people can't see it from a normal position it seems to be OK to ignore it ! GRRRRRRR

There are still a few things that need doing over winter, but for now, the R1 is nicely tucked up, sitting happy and clean and nice in the corner

I've just bought a 2nd one for the KTM actually. I had a couple of others but they were loose, flappy and horrible. So went with these as they fit nicely. The garage doubles up as a spinning/cycling room, so i like things out of the way ideally.

Hiya weeksy, I was in Pembrey on the Friday and Saturday and had a great couple of days. Weather was superb.
Probably gonna be booking the reduced numbers day on the 15th, then Llandow on the 16th.

Pity i missed you mate. Obviously as we only picked up the R1 on the Friday i'd not been over here yet etc.


Front wheel was on the wrong side of yukky, so as the socket arrived i whipped it out and gave it a clean. Like the rest of the bike, it came up really nice. Couple of marks/chips from rubber changes but apart from that, not bad at all.

Very nice - I've always been a fan of the "Lava Red" paint-scheme.

Some of your pics show it slightly different shade from what I expect - trick of the light? Camera setting?

SO, as some of you may have seen, the R1 is semi-pending sale. I'm not going to get into details in the public domain, but i've got 6-8 weeks and it may be sold... However, that's REALLY not what i want and a last resort for me, the R1 was bought partly for me as i love this model, but partly for Mrs Weeksys 40th birthday and our 10th wedding anniversary. With that in mind i thought i'd tackle the one job i've been putting off since a few days after i bought it.

When doing the polishing i saw a crack in the seat unit/undertray, in my defence, you can only see it when pretty much underneath the bike. But it made the bike not 100% so i had to take it on. I'd done one of these before on an old 5VY R1 i owned when i was fitting track fairings to it... It was a PROPER ball-ache of a job, everything on the back end has to come off, from electrics, to the exhausts. But it had to be done, whether it stays with me or goes to the new owner, it needed sorting.

Today was a day off cycling, so my lunch hour was bike fettling. To be fair, it took less time than i expected it to take and only on really an hour. There was a bazillion little clips, wires to be routed, bolts, nut and screws, but all went fairly painlessly. Fitting the top of the seat is one of the fiddliest bits as you've got to wangle both sides in the slots at the same time .... But all good.
