Newbie bike issues

Hi all
Thanks for allowing me on here.
I’ve got a 2000 R6 which was an old Cat D write off. I’m trying to get it back on the road but it’s got a knocking from the top of the engine. I’ve spoke to the guy I bought it off and apart from a slight ticking the engine was fine. I’ve not fiddled with the engine at all, only cleaned the carbs etc.
The engine sounds fine at idle, but as soon as you give it any revs it starts knocking, then dies down again.
Any ideas?

Hi mate and welcome to the forum

I wonder if the cam chain tensioner had stuck whilst it been standing and the cam chain is slapping the casing?
Do you have an exhaust port seal leaking?
Other than that you need to take the cam cover off and check the valves for height and go from there

Thanks for that. I was looking at it earlier and the tensioner seems to be working fine. I think I will take you advice and have a look at the valves.

When you say dies down again do you mean the engine dies down or the knocking dies down when you get to idle?

Is it 100% at the top I.E where carbs are? Or nearer the front where the plugs/manifolds are?

What work have you done so far? Did it run when you got it or is this the first time you have run it?

Hi,
I tried to run it once before and it was knocking then but had fuel issues, so I stripped the carbs, I was told the knocking could have had something to do with poor fuelling but this is the first time I’ve ran it since then. The guy who had it before me just mentioned the slight tapping, which is why he changed the chain tensioner.
I,ve not done anything to the engine since I’ve had it. Then knocking could be from the front as AJ said. It’s just winding me up because I’ve not touched the engine.

Sorry I forgot to mention, the engine seems to run fine although it will run for a while then cut out, but it will start up again without a problem. Like I said the knocking only starts above about 1000 rpm, below that it’s fine.

I've just seen the scary phrase "changed the tensioner". Was the engine OK afterwards?

That’s half the problem, I don’t know if it was ok after he changed it, I’m not sure if he ran it or not. He’s a mate so he knows about the problem but didn’t go into too much detail, I’ll ask him again.

Good luck. If there are any doubts, a check of the valve timing might be worthwhile.

Timing is a good place to start as the bike may be igniting the fuel to early (before the pistons reach TDC) that will cause a engine rattle on acceleration, if the timing chain tensioner has been replaced I would double check everything was set correctly again afterwards.
