Ex S1000RR owner

Post by liam_uk »

Howdy folks, just signed up tonight as i'm trying to get as much info as possible on R1's.
Currently got an S1000RR that I've had for over 2 years but its going back to BMW this week because its bollocks. I've not gel'd with the bike at all. Crashes, near death experiences and poor reliability.

So I've had a test ride of a 2010 R1 and i loved it, the bike was better suited to me and it felt far more composed than the S1K. I was very close to buying a 2013 R1 a few weeks ago but with it being the end of the season it doesn't make sense as it will just stay in the garage and end up last years model before i put any real miles on it.
I've read a few comments on here about the 14B having problems, can anyone shed some light on what those problems are and how common they are?

If i get a decent response I'll post GoPro footage and Photos of my on-track crash and near death experiences

Thanks

I got a dig bick. You this read wrong. You read that wrong too.

Hi mate I have the same model 2010 only thing I had to sort was the CCT as it was noisy didn't gel with it from the start due to the snatchy clutch until I had it flash tuned since then got to say I am in love with her .

Only thing needed sorting was the CCT on mine didn't gel with the bike at first the clutch required a lot of slipping going round corners until I had it flash tuned what a difference that has made since then I am in love and would not change for any other thou.

I've gotcha 2012 R1 and had no probs at all with it, I got a pv5 fitted and mapped to sort the snatchy throttle, but a flashtune will do the same.

Hi welcome in mate. The clutch and gearing took a bit of getting used to at lower speeds for me but now I've adjusted I love the 14B. Try and find one with cans on it as they are not cheap!

Welcome in m8, your the 3rd ex S1k owner on here now, says something does it not.

14b's are a bit thirsty if you like to use all of the power, suspension like all later r1's are a bit lacking especially the rear shock, should be ok if you ride slow and weigh next to feck all. The other guys have nother the clutch and cct issues. Damo and Scrappy have both had 14b's and now own 4C8's they have differing opinions on their old steeds

Thank you for the welcome and for the advice, everything I've read seems to suggest that a flash-tune is a must however I'm concerned about having no immobiliser.

No doubt about it the S1K is an absolute weapon.... in a straight line but once you've gone fast in a straight line a few times it loses it thrill.

So as promised here are some photos and a youtube clip from the only 2 trackdays i did on the S1K.

I should mention again that i had a GSXR K5 1000 before the S1K and i was pretty confident on it, I could run in the fast group and be comfortable.
This was my first trackday on the S1K, the bike had only done 1000miles and had just come out the wrapper 3 weeks previous. My first mistake was using the tyres that came on the bike, Conti Sport Attack (pure sh!t btw) and my second mistake i didn't adjust the tyre pressures for the track.
So there I am out on track struggling to come up to pace and getting passed by pretty much everything on track, the bike felt nervous and I was struggling to hold a line through the turns, i came back into the pits for a bit of a head scratch. I checked my tyre pressures and i was shocked at the reading, 50psi!! to be honest i thought the tyre pressure checker was duff it was so high but i adjusted the tyre pressures and went back out again, the bike felt a little better but i was still having issues. The photos below were taken at the hairpin, the majority of the time going through this corner i was getting a lot of vibration through the front end which i later found out was me pushing the front end too hard.

Everything fine so far

Front end vibration again

Hmm, something is not right

After that i spent a bit of money preping for my next trackday.
I had the suspension setup for me, i bought a new set of OZ Racing Lightweight wheels and bought a new set of Michelin Power Ones. I was absolutely ready for this trackday and i was looking forward to it.
I took it easy on my first 5 laps because the tyres were new and then i was ready to come up to pace. the video below shows me just about to start my 6th lap.

http://youtu.be/v5rhlw_f_FI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I came back to the pits immediately and the track staff came up to me and told that was the biggest accident that never happened then they all buggered off to watch it back again on the circuit CCTV.
I did go back out again but i had zero confidence in the bike and that was last trackday i've done.
I got a dig bick. You this read wrong. You read that wrong too.

Welcome to the group... just watched your vid...!!!
I think I'd have had to pull in to the pits to change my underwear if it'd been me !!!
Had my 14B for 2 years now, bought it from new, and I've never had a single second of trouble from it. No track riding (yet) but on the road it's been perfect

Mmm bit of a scary one that one  ,i took an S thou for a test ride & it DID everything so easy but had no soul in my eyes, obviously didnt take it on a track day so couldn't comment on its capabilities,so returned it back to the shop & rode off on my 14B back home & the difference between the two is sooooo far apart its untrue, once home i decided to take the 4c8 out for a blast & thats when i made up my mind, the 4c8 was just easier to ride imho but to be fair this was on an unflashed 14b which judging by some of the lads on here would of made a big difference, also it was fairly modded (chassis wise) so the handling wasn't stock, the engine is a bit v-twin'ish of which im not a fan of so that was probly another deciding factor, anyhow the 4c8 isnt without its faults & mine's had a few tweaks/mod's to get it how i like it,i think scrappy is in the other way round in my thinking but im sure he'll give you his take on the matter however he got rid of his 14b in a slightly different way to me lol,p.s welcome in Liam

Thanks.
When you throw a brand new 14k bike down the track you have a tendency to remember the fine details  so much so as I was sliding down the track I remember consciously trying keep my helmet from hitting the ground.
I was finished braking and I had a neutral throttle position, when front end tucked I was moments away from applying throttle for the corner exit.

I had a 2005 gsxr 1000.

Jesus that's a proper brown pants moment! :o

I did my 1st track day this year on my 2012 R1, once I got my tyre pressures right the bike was confidence inspiring, found the suspension a bit soft under hard braking but then I'm 100kg with my leathers on so will be heavy for the standard springs. I had a RSV Aprilia before so didn't have a problem with the engine braking, fitted a PCV and had it mapped to sort the fuleing and the snatchy throttle
I won't be up to the speed that you are doing if your in the fast group
