i just hope you get a bike the fits and one you can enjoy and progress on.
good luck mike
Very true Luke, the R1 might be good but it's let down by its rider... Me that isLuke03R1 wrote:As for what's good on track... It's who's good not what they're riding!

Had you ridden off road bikes before you passed your test ?Beefy5pw wrote:ill be honest here , didn't read every post but caught the genral consensus
my first bike after getting my licence in 2012 was a 5pw r1 , 3 days after pasing to be exact ,
ive experience on off road bikes , and a Cpl 600s ,
the thing got walloped the 15 mile home , and saw 155mph within 15 minuites of leaving the buyers house ,
not big n clever but end of the day if your a grown man you should be able to manage a throttle I wanted to know how aggressive it was ,
all this talk of catching you out and flipping at the slightest whiff of throttle is bollocks, my injected bike is very tractable and a doddle on the gas ,
my attitude was , it my hard earned cash whats the point on buying a bike you don't want, only to be bored of it in 3 months , to then loose money on the resale when you be better off just getting what you want ,
don't get me wrong im no mick doohan , and the bike still far better than my skill set , but its all about progression , your confidence will build with every mile and you will want to do more miles on a bike you want to ride !!

not sure I'd call all the previous advice bollocks eitherjompy wrote:Had you ridden off road bikes before you passed your test ?Beefy5pw wrote:ill be honest here , didn't read every post but caught the genral consensus

You say you jumped straight on an R1 3 days after passing your test but also say you have had couple of 600's, were these before you passed your test?Beefy5pw wrote:ill be honest here , didn't read every post but caught the genral consensus

Maybe you ran around on 600's before passing your test giving you a bit of experience on a bike before getting to grips with the R1, its a bit different to jumping straight on one from a learner bike.
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo IF this was the first bike you had ridden apart from a few lessons would it be the ideal first bike? In your opinionBeefy5pw wrote:stug wrote:You say you jumped straight on an R1 3 days after passing your test but also say you have had couple of 600's, were these before you passed your test?Beefy5pw wrote:ill be honest here , didn't read every post but caught the genral consensus

As I clearly wrote first bike I got after passing my test was an r1
I didn't say this was the first bike I've ever ridden ? More that I went and purchased the bike I wanted

Not having a go Bri but you do have previous bike experience then & from experience off road is some of the best experience , look at Chris walker just for example ! With off road / mx you learn a hell of a lot about throttle control , balance & control so it's not really the same as someone having only ever passed they're CBT & then jumping on an R1 !Beefy5pw wrote:Yes I'd ridden off road and 600s before passing my test ,
And regards walloping it home I merely mean I gave it some beans thru the gears as I wanted to see what the acceleration was like ,
Don't we all put your foot down when test driving a new car ??
At no point did i say All the previous advice was bollocks.
End of the day he's a grown man ... I for one wouldn't be asking what bike I should buy with my hard earned, go to a dealer , take a test ride & if you come back shaking like a shitting dog It may not be for you ....
Seen high mile 5pws go for £2k so what's his budget ?????
Threads like this a no win situation with advice as everyone will have there own advice
Just buy the bike you want to ride ..
Bri
I was going to make a comment about him trying green laning as I found it really did help my confidence and my bike control but green laning isn't cheep .Beefy5pw wrote:I not having a pop either jompy , it's nice to see a forum
That thinks about individuals
I'd say the off road and trail riding probably stood me better than using my old mans 600
If the bike squirms or spins the rear it didn't faze me
I'd very much recommend a cheap moto x bike and a loacal farmers field
Once you get that throttle control in it will greatly improve riding
Well that was exactly my point, you had experience before jumping on an R1 whereas the OP at the moment has not.Beefy5pw wrote:stug wrote:You say you jumped straight on an R1 3 days after passing your test but also say you have had couple of 600's, were these before you passed your test?Beefy5pw wrote:ill be honest here , didn't read every post but caught the genral consensus

Basically i think that its down to the individual, some people pick things up better than others. It's all in the wrist, its all in the wrist(happy gilmore stylie). If the linkage between your brain and wrist is good then all should be good, however, if its not then you'll be spending more time thinking about the throttle on a ride than observing your surroundings, getting the right lines and just enjoying yourself. My first bike was a 07 zx6r, after a taxi driver wrote that off i was given a bandit to cruise about on. I loved it, it was a different ride experience. I'm sure i've become a smoother rider for it. Do i wish i had a bandit to start on? tbh No. Do i wish i got a litre bike instead of 600. No. i enjoyed flicking through the gears and thought it would improve my riding.

Ahh well i've started now!!!
Instructor said the same to me lolcmsmwoo1 wrote:hiya again folks
I picked up on some of the later stories... Interestingly I was doing a spare (advanced) lesson on the ER6 again - I spoke to the dude who takes me (an acomplished race rider & advanced trainer to boot) he actually rides very little on the roads these days (obviously apart from his job). HE gave me some good sound advice after the lesson while we spent a good 40 mins just talking bikes. I was moaning about the ER6 feeling (what he described I described as sloppy) and got onto the subject of various bikes and I was discussing the fazer 1000 and bandits. I also spoke to him about me looking daft of the R1/R6's gixxers etc. He really made me think. He basically said, when you open up the garage you need to look at your bike and get that feeling - like yeh this is my bike, I love it, I love to ride it etc. etc. I spoke about my change of heart on the R1 as I was interested and not knowing how powerful it was really liked the bike. His opinion is and was, buy a bike for yourself, be careful and whatever you buy you need to respect it and be in charge of the throttle. I asked him it was a ridiculous thought not knowing how powerful it was and he said where I was it would be ok and he wasnt terrified I'd had that thought.
Im not seeing this as a green flag to say I coulda handled an R1 in any way but I found, and still do find it interesting on the different camps - some are pro-"you can do what you want just be careful" and some pro-"take your time and work up to it" - one things for sure - EVERYBODY is trying to look out for you and help so for that I am literally gobsmacked at the community out there and how much time every1 is happy to spend giving advice when it's asked.
