Re: Newbie Needing Advice!
FFS, Ill be the voice of reason, the 14B is a fantastic bike if its your bag, however most on here that have owned the b1tch have changed back to either a 5vy or 4c8, now I have a 4c8 but would have a 14b if I had a weeks test ride and I liked it, so that's the challenge, test ride it and make sure its for you!!! All R1's have their issues look the up by model number (5vy 4c8 14b) and see what you can live with test em and then buy.

Re: Newbie Needing Advice!
Pete, has the nicotine withdrawl passed or something ? that is the most level headed, balanced post I have ever seen from you.
Colin, "most" people with a 14B have not reverted back to a 4C8 though, 1 or 2 on here have, but Pete is right test ride the bikes before you buy, the 14B is very V-Twin in it's characteristics, i.e. full of torque low down and ain't a screamer, it's one mans pleasure some people don't like it.
Things to look out for dodgy cam chain tensioner, clutch and melting under the front light lenses, all I think Yamaha will replace even outside warranty if pushed as they were known design faults although not recalls.
Get rid of end cans, mid cat pipe (makes the bike very hot) fit a powercommander or flash-tune it (later can make it less like a V-Twin and improve throttle action).
You will love the sound it's intoxicating and for me better than a regular inline 4

Yep i'd agree there,as some people on here know i had both the 14b & 4c8 and kept the 4c8 so yep, deffo get a test ride and make up you're own mind. Oh and the mod Mike forgot to mention regarding the 14b is a relitivley cheap one,a £17 advert on ebay to sell the thingPJC wrote:FFS, Ill be the voice of reason, the 14B is a fantastic bike if its your bag, however most on here that have owned the b1tch have changed back to either a 5vy or 4c8, now I have a 4c8 but would have a 14b if I had a weeks test ride and I liked it, so that's the challenge, test ride it and make sure its for you!!! Sold my GSXR in september with the idea of picking up a bargain in the winter. Hopefully I'll have new toy soon!

Re: Newbie Needing Advice!
Its a buyers market m8 that's for sure. Can't say I have seen any high spec bikes for sale at a daft cheap price this winter and believe me I have looked.LOCKE wrote:two wrote:welcome to the site ... best pick one up soon ... prices will go up once the sun comes out to play

I am not knocking the 14b when I say their prices have dropped at an alarming rate, I mention it only for you to take into account what may seem like a cheap buy is still expensive. Look for a bike with all the bits on, a lot came with free Akro pipes, and tail tidies in the first place.
Tyre choice, depends what you like, lots of R1 riders use 2ct's of some description, but Pirelli, Dunlop etc are popular. I use pilot power 2ct but after seeing a road pilot 2ct in action I will be changing to those next time. (My R1 ate a set of PP 2ct's in 1600 miles)
Suspension, 4c8 and 14b have a very similar setup and are set way too hard as standard, unless your a very heavy (Fat) lad
If I was to change any cycle parts on my 4c8, it would be the front disks and rear shock, if I owned a 14b and I may well at some point, same bits shared between the model and same weight then the same would apply, disks and shock
They do use quite a bit more fuel than your gixxer from my 1100 mile trip with a 14b, 4c8 and k3 I would say about 30 to the tank less when ridden with some gusto
Not sure what gsxr you had so difficult to help on any other points. I will end this saying the Yams are well built and in my opinion make a better all round superbike than anything else about at the moment
Keep us informed
