Hi folks,

I have just joined the forum this morning.

I live in Cornwall and ride a 5jj model R1. Its a bit of a tarts handbag to be honest as its my second bike. I've ridden R1's and R6's for the last 12 years and decided to settle on the older carb model for the looks but will be changing the engine and upgrading suspension internals to move performance up to modern standards.

Hopefully catch up with a few of you guys for a ride out or track day next year.

If your going to be modding 5jj or for that matter the R6 any chance of you starting a projects thread for each bike with plenty of pic's please buddy , we love a good project !
to help you along the the different sections for each bike should have workshop manuals & parts micro fiche so you can check what parts the engines share also

Welcome to the forum mate, beautiful roads in Cornwall, my favourite portreath to hayle and then st ives to st just.

Where a outs are you, my parents used to live in Illugan ... My dad is buried in the church there, only brought mum up north cos she can't look after herself and going back to Cornwall every other week became impossible. Must admit I miss Cornwall.

The fitted engine is fine. I've only done a 5 mile test ride then a track day at Mallory but it pulls hard enough to shake the front end and loosen up the rear. It has 40k miles on it though so I suspect it burns a bit f oil but not done enough miles to know. Cases are all clean and no scrapes so probably ok. I rebuilt one as a project a few years ago and it was a waste of time as the engine was perfect when I opened it up.

I am upgrading to a 4XV engine that's been rebuilt, blue printed, polished, raised compression and strengthened 2nd and 6th gears. Once the engine is run in I will fit new jets and get it dyno'd. It was dyno'd last year and certified 152 at the crank and 125 at the back wheel. My target is 150 at the back wheel.

I love the look of the older bikes but want the performance or the newer ones. When I done Mallory in July we stayed overnight for a few beers and I just kept looking at it and smiling even though I was slower than when I done the same track on a new R6 2 years ago. You know you got the right bike for you when that happens.

Mallory is a nice track tom.... My claim to fame is I was the 100th rider to fall at edwinas after they pit the chicane in..... Never did Mallory fur 5 years cos of that, went back and thought what the hell was bothering me, it's a wonderful track.

Cheers. My guess is a slipping clutch or knackered chain but irrelevant as they are being replaced anyway.
