newbie saying hi

Post by ray reckless »

hi people i only just found how to post on the newbies section, just dropped in to say hello.

i picked up a 99 r1 only a few weeks ago,not had a big bike for good few years, always liked the 4xv and a friend was selling a nice clean
and standard one,so i took it off him,,,had a few little problems with it,gears mainly, but i found shift arm broken so thats a good thing,,but it still jumps out of second
here and there so will need to look at that,,got a pipe off ebay for it as i wanted a bit of sound from it.gonna do a few bits to it..but all just bolt on off etc,as i want to put it back to complete standard if need be...im gonna be asking some questions along the way.im sure i can get lots of help on here,,been reading alot, looks good.many thanks.

Welcome in Ray
The bad news is that usually the second gear will get worse & i'm affraid it's an engine out job when your ready to do it ,you also have to change 2nd & 6th gears , i think new oem parts are around £350 . Buster covered the gearbox fix in the projects section and a few of the other guys like Alex_h have done it too so theres plenty of advise
The 4xv's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 5jj like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems ,the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .
http://www.partzilla.com can be helpful for online parts micro fiches for getting part numbers & checking prices in the states you can then enter the partnumber into O.E.M part search on places like http://www.wemoto.com
have a damn good look around the 4xv & 5jj sections
enjoy :)

Mate the truth is i only know what i've read & had to learn , it's all in this forum somewhere but if i can save people the hassle of trying to find individual posts & i can put them all into one then i will ;)
Boosters thread
viewtopic.php?f=38&t=6626
there are a lot more threads & people who have done the 2nd & 6th gear , mark_ypvs had to have his 2nd gear sorted on triggers broom , he bought the parts & paid a mate to do it
