Newbie R1'er

Post by Grahamh123 »

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and new to the R1. Only got it a few weeks ago from making a change from Gixxers. I'm glad I did. What a bike? Mine is the 5JJ model but it was registered in 2002 which is confusing. I found that out when I started ordering new parts. How does that work? My bike is definitely an 00-01.

Anyway I'm glad I found this forum as there seems to be a lot of good info on here.

Ride safe.

Hi Mate and welcome to the forum, it's not usual for a bike to be registered late, i had a 4C8 which is an 07/08 but mine was on a 09 plate

So you will still order parts for the 00-01 even though it's registered an 02

Welcome in Graham
Those 5jj's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 4xv like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Make sure you look in the 4xv & 5jj sections .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems , the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .
http://www.partzilla.com can be helpful for online parts micro fiches for getting part numbers & checking prices in the states as theyre prices are cheaper or you could try https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/browser/ ... bike/yzfr1
enjoy :)
