Newbie from S.Wales

Hi all, thought i`d join this forum as it looks like there`s loads of info on here and as i`m looking for my first R1 i thought it might be a good idea.
Have had a bandit 6 a couple of thundercats and a blade 929 but now looking to the R1 way, preferably a 5pw maybe 5jj if my budget does`nt stretch to it.
Any advise very much appreciated as i don`t know a lot about these bad boys.
I`ve looked at some that have had full exhaust fitted so exup is removed, is this a problem if it has`nt been remapped?
Sorry no pics as i have`nt got a bike at the mo,lol.

As you've said this place is a wealth of knowledge but there's also a really good camaraderie here and plenty of piss taking as well
As for the 5jj & 5pw other than body work I don't think you'll find a lot of difference between them , so say the 5pw is meant to be slower ( didn't seem like it when I was following Ginger ) and unlike the first injected blades the 5pw's rudimentary injection works very well . . . . . Ahh but the 5jj and it's carbs with the lovely mid-range . . . . . Decisions , decisions !
Have a good look through the 4xv , 5jj & 5pw section & what you can't find someone should be able to answer .
As for a straight through system sometimes as Donny has found you can get away without setting them up but sometimes you'll get a flat spot , with the carbed R1's it's Dyna time & new jets , with the 5pw it's dyno time & a power commander

welcome in rob either bike would be a good choice - i'd just be looking for as original example as possible- maybe with a couple of tasteful mods like can & steering damper- good luck m8 - post up links if ya spot owt then the lads can give observations/advice

I`ve contacted the guy he said that it`s 8 owners(a few more than i would have liked really), some service history and race exhaust fitted but light on now because of exup removed, have to get the plug in to get the management light off.
Have`nt seen it yet having a look maybe tuesday, looks quite good, any thoughts?

I`m in cardiff, the guy said he would probably take 2600, i`m just a bit concerned about the lack of history, the number of owners and the exup removal.
My budget is 2500-2800 so maybe i wont get anything better for that sort of money, perhaps the 5jj or 4xv is the way to go?

4xv prices are going up , you can still pick up a bargain if your patient .
At the end of the days it's a second hand bike just make sure it doesn't jump out of second gear and it runs ok .
My wifes from Baglan so we pop down that area every so often to visit friends

Take your time and try not to buy the first bike that you look at!

Not sure about that 5pw, I'd suggest that you look at the ownership history first and then decide wether to take it further.

I`ve just been and had a look at that 5pw and i dont think it`s for me, sometimes you can just tell within the first 10 seconds if you know what i mean, so i`ll carry on looking i`m in no rush really except that i want one now!

Thanks for your opinions i`m going to have a look into the 5jj and 4xv`s aswell i think, i just thought that the 5pw was a better bike overall.

Ive had both, 5pw is a way better bike, exup removal is always a good idea, I did map mine though and also fitted velocity stacks, if you go for the earlier models make sure its got a steering damper and check 2nd gear by giving it a handful , the 5pw model didnae have gearbox issues as far as I know, I did 30k on mine, blew 2nd gear on my 5jj at 1500 miles lol, both are great bikes, if ya like wheelies by an early model, if ya like handling and smooth power by the 5PW, id buy that red yin in a heartbeat

Welcome in. I'm new myself to both forum and R1's but can offer some advice....

Listen to the guys on here that are telling you to look around a bit. Sounds like you are.
There's tons of good advice on here coming from a great community so get stuck in and enjoy the banter, piss-taking and the bike when you get it. They'll tell you whats needed once you've found what you like.

5pw still sufferred from the worn dogs on the 2nd and 6th cogs ... so make sure you give 2nd some stick on any test ride to check all is good
