Hello

Post by R1mwh »

Hi All,

My name is Mark and end of last year was able to find and secure purchase of a 1999 4XV, okay I should have opted for a red and white 98 but in fairness I prefer and think the blue is stunning and im more about the beauty and looks of the this bike.

Anyway, so I was lucky enough to find a one owner, meticulously maintained, fully serviced 4XV completely standard and I mean completely throughout it's whole life. (NB: still on its original tyres - front and back!) After much negotiating, the previous owner was an absolute gentleman and really didn't want to part but I bought unseen, unridden, unheard (silly I know) and I had collected by Scott at Motorcycle Delivery UK (highly recommended, great service by the way) But everything the seller said and provided and details and information we discussed and emailed was evident this was no ebay hack (no pun intended).

Now that I've got it, its currently in bits of me to assess what items need replacing where generally age is getting a hold or just looks scraggy and bothers me. Put it this way I have already commenced purchase for replacement of many parts and intentions to refurb suspension, etc. Rebuild thread to follow.

In the meantime I'll add some pics that I have before I started braking it down and thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Sorry for the crappy pictures, but once I get the hang of this photo bucket and can drag the bike out the corner of the garage, I'll get some better ones.

Mark

Thanks guys, I've almost got everything bought and sourced for the rebuild and in turn will have an abundance of spares I'll be giving away(nuts bolts, clips, other bits) that I'm sure many on here could benefit from. I've also trawled the forum on many faq's and posts 4XV related that have already helped me give an understanding of what lies ahead, so its an honour to be a part of that and have access to that information.

Lovely bike, bought one similar a few months ago although it will be having a few choice mods (all standard parts kept safe and sound though) [emoji106]
Old enough to know better.

The bike looks great - blue is definitely the best colour. How many miles has it done?

Hard to tell from the photos but the condition looks like new. A set of new tyres no doubt, but what else are you replacing?

Welcome in mate. Of course blue was the way to go!
Can verify Scott at Motorcycle Delivery UK is a top bloke too. Picked mine up yesterday morning. Packs em nicely so not expecting scratches when it comes back.
Enjoy your bike and the forum. Fun and informative on many levels!! :D

Thanks all for the kind words.
Its done little under 6k miles and is like new everywhere you look. However I want it to look as new as it did when it was new 17 years ago now. To do so, I may be going above and beyond what anyone other sane person would need to do. But I enjoy this part as much as using them. Therefore my intentions are to replace every single screw, bolt, clip related to the body panels, side stand, caliper bolts all that sort of stuff. Ive bought a brand new radiator and fan assembly, tyres (obviously), chain and sprockets, disc and sprocket bolts and much more, yes I could have easily cleaned or refurbed a lot or all of it with a bit of elbow grease and I've potentially thrown a lot of money unnecessarily at it. But I've been procuring this stuff for over 9+ months now and look forward to the day the last few items come in for me to start, and I get enough room in the garage?!
There is a few marks and scratches on the top cowling assembly and lower fairings and as a result I'll have those panels repainted and decals replaced.

I think I like the challenge of trying to obtain something that is apparently "no longer available", everything I have sourced is genuine Yamaha (apart from the tyres), but for example I was able to get the front "R1" decal for the top fairing and the foam that goes onto the side of the radiator! okay all the way from the states or Japan, but I got them?

Not trying to tell you guys nothing you wont already know but my experiences so far have found Partzilla to be fantastic for cost savings, if your willing to wait and even better than fowlers. Then there is the "European" websites - CMS, etc. that are like treasure troves, again depending what your looking for. I'm sure all you guys have your own preferences and could probably tell me many more but I thought be worth mentioning.

My only remaining decision is whom to refurb the forks and rear shock unit?......I'm torn between MCT and Brooke, based on the all the posts on this forum and interwebs right ups? So any recommendations or history on that would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks all for looking

I could be interested in some of the parts that you are replacing ....

It is easier to find parts for the 99 model than the 98. My bike was damaged earlier this year and the front fairing should have been replaced. But it had to be repaired as that part is no longer available in the 98 paint scheme.

At that mileage, I expect the suspension will be fine unless you're going to ride it hard. Definitely have the forks serviced with fresh oil, but I'd suggest riding it before making any decisions. Even at 50,000 miles, the suspension on my bike works well, although I'm nearly out of rebound damping adjustment on the rear shock!

You may want to fit a steering damper though if it doesn't have one. [emoji3]

Thanks for the advice on the suspension. Once i'm in a position to reconcile what's been removed from the bike already I'll get a list posted.
