98 4xv engine problem

Post by 98R1Wardy »

Hi. Anybody help. Ive just fitted a 4xv engine in my r1 . I bought this as reconditioned which i believe it has been. However i done 475 miles of low reving miles when it suddenly just stopped with a backfire and struggling power.

Seems like timing has moved on chain?

Is this possible?

Welcome in Melvyn
Sorry to hear your bad luck , chances are if it's jumped a tooth it may have bent a valve :(
Did the rebuilt engine have a polished & ported head by any chance ?
It maybe worth buying a £7 endoscopy camera from Amazon and having a look down the plug holes at the tops of the pistons .
Hope you get it sorted cheap

Hi. It did have ported ported head apparantley! But its a shame you cant trust people anymore.

When you turn the engine over without plugs it sounds wrong. But no knocking came with it and i it will turn over with plenty of compression?

Thanks

I take it you bought the engine from eBay ? If so there's a guy that sells some pretty clean looking R1 engines on there that has come up in the past . The engines are slightly tuned and look like the cases have been cleaned up with a wire brush , apparently he doesn't build them too well and uses instant gasket rather than proper paper gaskets .
I'll see if i can find the thread

Yes it was this one. But it wasnt overly exspensive so dont see why hes had to make things hard. I paid him £1000 cash collected which running as it was is ok. But if i would of known it was poorly built i would of pulled it apart.

For that reason I am selling it as a spares or repair for the budget price of £1200. See full details below.
