Hi All
I was today made aware of this forum via the FB group so thought I’d say hello as I’ve decided to get the bike on the road after a couple of years tucked away as a ‘pending project’ and this looks a great place to build on my very limited knowledge and I could definitely do with a bit of advice on the below couple of points!
As a bit of background, it seems to run well but has been stood for many years (tires are high on the list!).
From what I can gather it has the ‘classic period mods’ of aftermarket undertray, mini indicators and a lairy iridium screen. I’ve found an original silencer (to replace yet more iridium!) and the screen will go as soon as I can locate a clear one. Wheels also look to have been painted but bodywork is nice and as far as I can tell looks original. I also recently spent a good few hours removing a few ‘period’ stickers...
I have an original undertray but am wondering if I’ll also need any additional fixings or parts to put this back to standard?
I’d value any experience on this as don’t want to disable the project further and will just use as is if I need to track down more bits?
History is also a bit sparse so also thinking I’ll get it serviced and valves checked. Also getting the 7k error on rev counter so suspect EXUP needs TLC - does anyone have and recommendations of anyone in the East of the country (I’m in Norfolk) who would be good to get the work done (although guessing it should be fairly straightforward for any decent bike shop)?
I’ve found the site useful already so many thanks in advance for any wisdom/ideas or gentle piss taking if the bike turns out to be a bitsa!
Whilst I’ve had a fairly diverse range of bikes this is the first R1 (and only 2nd Yamaha after a TY250) I’ve had and I’m looking forward to getting it ready for the road as I imagine it will make a nice contrast to my other bikes - a BSA and a KTM Adv!

Welcome to the forum John [emoji1303][emoji4] I see you have one of those rare very fast... indeed fooking fast Red 4XV’s .... they are worth a shed load more than the blue ones...
Being serious now... we do have a bit of red blue banter on here... red always wins [emoji4]
Thank you sir a first class introduction and you posted a pic too... which is great for our members who can’t read.... mostly the blue R1 owners... [emoji23].... stop it Stephen.... [emoji849]
The guys on here, Duncan and Clarky (both own blue 4XV’s) know a shed load about these R1’s... indeed what they don’t know isn’t worth knowing... so there will be loads of help around to answer any questions you may have...
Don’t ask me... I’m a red R1... and useless [emoji849]

John I see the chimp dragged you over to the dark side. As well as a bit of banter with us old gits there is a gold mine of information to be had. With the 4xv if you’ve got time have a look at Carson’s rebuild now it’s longer than War and Peace but very informative but as we all seem to have a lot of time on our hands it’s a good read.
If it’s been standing your exup probably needs a clean I’d be changing pads fluids and a basic clean of the carbs as a minimum.
As the Old gits have already mentioned colour is a bit of a thing on this forum just know you’ve happened upon the fastest colour I know this to be true as it’s the one I have.
Welcome in.

Welcome back John glad you decided to return
Great intro and you even remembered a pic
Loads of great info , the projects section and the 4xv/5jj sections are cgoing to be your friend
First things first go through the wiring as it can cause alsorts of problems especially the big white 20 pin connector behind the left side fairing panel and obviously as clarky said fluids are a must .
You'll get plenty of help from the guys . . . . . .. .. and piss taking
As Stephen (stever1) would say "the only stupid question is the question not asked" and we've hd some pretty stupid questions .
Most important , please join in , alot of us have been around a while but there are no clicks
