Hello..

Post by B1G »

Hi,

I'm 27 from Essex, i ride a Yamaha R1 2002 - 5PW
I've just recently bought it, ive had KTM Supermoto's and a GSXR750 previously.
I love the R1, i have since i was old enough to watch them on the tv, i'm as nuts abouts cars as i am about bikes, infact anything with an engine has my attention.

After buying my R1 from a guy in London i rode it round the streets and everything was fine, got it on the motorway in high rpm and i felt the clutch slip :( bastad.. Anyway put a new clutch in it the other weekend, that was all ok but it has a rattle between 2-3k rpm, almost sounds like its in the exhaust but the rattle gets quicker. Worse when cold but still there when warm. I'm praying its the exup valve rattling its butt off but if anyone has any other advice would be much appreciated. I have a video of it if anyone reads this and knows a bit about these engines.

Thanks very much

Hi PJC, thanks!

I'm praying it is the exup valve, ive been riding it to and from london and its not really got worse, i'm still like a horny rabbit with it and the exhaust sounds awesome in high rpm so its getting ridden reasonably hard on most outings and the rattle hasnt really got much worse.

I'm from near Romford, yourself?

Ive put a video of it on youtube heres a link to it:

Thanks

Thanks luke. When i did the clutch i was going to take the exup valve out but with light disappearing and the fact the first 2 bolts i tried were ceased i just boxed it back up as i was due to go out on it the next morning.
Are exup valves a common issue on these?
Does anyone make exup blanking plates?

You'll probably find them bolts are shagged so if the exup does need a overhaul most on here replace with stainless bolts after you snap them off then drill them out, mine need doing but while a small adjustment keeps it quite it'll leave it for now ;) have a search on here I think theres a few threads and maybe a how too

Nice one thanks mate.
I'm praying it is the exup and not the engine, it does sound like an exhaust rattle so hopefully it is that.
I've got a welder at home so might just do away with it all together and weld the hole up.

Welcome in Nath
Hope you get your rattle sorted soon

Like Luke say's there should be a fair bit on here to read about Exup's & there's two rule's of thought
A) keep it yamaha spent alot on making the Exup work for a reason , you'll loose bottom end i.e. it'll be crap pulling off unless you get it set up
B) chuck it in the bin

check the thread's & make your own mind up
Happy riding :)

Does sound like the Exup Nath(fingers crossed it is),why not whip off the headers and fire her up for a very short while,at least if the noise is still there, you know its something more serious than the Exup, but i thibk the noise will disapear if you try that one, then drill out them pesky cheese bolts and sort it proper ;)

Thanks guys :)

I played with the cable adjusters, well tightened them and the rattle isnt there at idle anymore but still there a little bit when revved/ridden. I think it needs a rebuild, the bloke i bought it off had it 5 years and it looked as though it'd never been cleaned! When i got it home and gave it a proper clean i starting uncovering some nastys, firstly the rear wheel, so i'll be getting them done over xmas, and the head, the black is corroding so thinking of high temp matt black paint.. anyone else done this?

The paint on the head is a common problem on the 5pw, mine is the same so it'll be interesting to see if any one else has painted there's.
I've just had my wheels powder coated so if you're thinking of that then it'll cost you roughly £100/120 for the pair

I had to adjust./fiddle with mine a few times to get it right, and like boris my paints flaking to another week point is the frame and swingarm coating will rub off with no a lot of effort. ..... good apart from that though!!

I had issues with mine an aw on my 5PW so I chucked it in the bin, made up a cover plate no bother, use a bit off cardboard for a template and go see your nearest engineering place. Ran ok and all, wee bit rough below 5 k but nothing major, basically same you get with a full system, so I fitted pc111 and a bmc air filter and graves velocity stacks and had it custom mapped , result was 7hp extra everywhere in rev range and a very smooth bike, best move I did , leave the servo motor connected so u dinnae get an Fi code in the dash, do it but I do recommend you get it mapped ASAP after.

Thanks chaps, i've decided im going to rebuild the ex up valve so i dont loose the low down torque.
I know a good wheel refurb centre in Rochford, Essex called Alloy Art, i had my M3 wheels done there (one of the few places that does does diamond cutting) i think he charges £45 to acid strip, shot blast then powder coat bike wheels.
Think i'm going to give the head a few dusts with high temp matt black and see how it comes out, cant look worse than it does now!

If ya like your motards try putting a set of renthals on it & getting rid of the fairing , before i bought my R1 one of my mates likened it to my KTM but on steroid's . . . . . he wasn't wrong ;)
