Upgraded to an R1

Post by Symnz »

My YZF Thunderpussy got written off so I now bought an 1999 R1.
My days are numbered. :P
Based in Southampton, Hampshire. One of the other reasons for buying an R1 is that my friend owns an R6 so had to out-do him. ;-)

Probably the worst time of year to get one as the weather is about to turn sh!t but I have my ZZR600 still to chuck around when it gets wet! (the weather, not the girlfriend...however she does like the look of the new bike, haven't taken her out for a ride on the back yet. I mean I've ridden her while she...right back on topic)!!!

The guy I bought it from had a leg op so couldn't ride it anymore. He had it for 8 or so years and it has only covered 14600 miles when I bought it. Condition is perfect, not a scratch!! Came with a datatool and data tag also but sounds far too quiet, even with a Micron (I hate micron) can.
Only issue is the error code 7000 on the RPM...something to do with the Exup system or something. Not a big issue from what I've read so far...I think.

Other than that and the b1tch of a tank slapper resulting in my balls migrating to my throat, all is good! :-)

That's my Thundercat before being taken from me. She was so pretty, my first love.

Welcome in Leon
First must have bit of kit is a steering damper as R1's have a habbit of shaking their heads at the most inopportune moments when your really on it !
Exup valves & problems have been covered a lot in the R1/4xv section .
Exhaust , I know you've probably already checked but does it have a removable baffle ? If not can it be modified while your not using it ?
Lots of fruity cans out there , I think my mivv sounds mint .

Welcome in mate.
Have to agree with Luke about the thundercat paint job it's a bit in your face. Leave that R1 paint alone

Is there a difference between a cheap and expensive damper? Had a look on eBay, starting at £12 and up to £600. I want one that does what it says on the tin. I'm in no need for fancy hardware at the moment. :)

Also looking at a set of rearsets. The standard ones look boring.

The can is a race can, no baffle.
I have the standard one for MOT's but that's even quieter!!!

Thinking about that one, gotta measure mine first, got the link pipe already, just need to measure the diameter. :)

There are a few cosmetic things I'm going to change over the next few months. LED indicators, short leavers (I don't like using 4 fingers, aches the hand too much), clear brake light, and maybe a couple of other things.

It does look better in person. :P Honest! :D

How about riding this? Not sure it would be very aerodynamic

I'd go for an ohlins damper or a sprint, as for the rearsets the gilles ones look good on your model

Are they universal?

I think you'll find that the 4xv & the 5jj are the same with the damper and the rearsets

Welcome in m8, don't think I need mention that :shifty: lovely paint job :shifty: The R1 looks good, Gilles rear sets are great but bloody expensive if you need parts.

Steering dampers, ohlins are very good but unless its brand new or just serviced then expect a big bill. Sprint for the money are a great buy. There are others of course as I am sure your aware.

No Dampers and rearsets are not universal fitment on all R1's

Leon your 7000rpm error code for the Exup is probably the reason for your quiet exhaust , It could be that the Exup motor has packed up or the Exup is seized meaning the Exup valve is closed which if i'm correct ( wait's for the correction police ) means when the valve is closed you get more bottom end & quieter exhaust note & it obviously opens up at higher revs giving you more top end & it gets loud , so save your cash & sort your exup first & if it is jammed shut wait till it's sorted cuz you'll really notice a difference at about 8-9000rph. ( hope that didn't sound patronizing )

Heres my steering damper (not the best pic's but i couldn't be arsed to got out to the garage )

At the moment, playing with the shock to get it right for me. The roads in town are sh!t and bumpy but out of town they are smooth so trying to find a happy medium.
