Welcome to the forum Alan, you are in the right place to get answers to any questions you may have, the forum members have an encyclopaedia full of knowledge, especially around all things yamaha. Peeps are friendly and supportive, though there can be some banter, which is good for a laugh. I would expect the rest if the guys will be along later.

So welcome

Stephen :P

You seem like a nice guy and we would love to have you here on our little forum but I really don't think it's a good idea thinking about getting an r1 just yet. But it's your money, your life, you do what you like but I can sleep well knowing I tried to talk you out of it.

Alan, I'm with Sam and Phil (pod) on this one, the R1 is one hell of a bike and it's too much fir a first bike, crikey I've been riding fjr donkeys years and it's still too much of a bike fir me, I mean I cannot ride it to it's full potential, and if I could I would be a world class racer. As Phil says it's yiur money and yiur life, you are an adult so you know what yiu want, however we on here know R1's and they do bite even the most experianced riders on here get bitten by them. My advice, from an old man, would be like Sam said, do a few years on the SV then get the R1 yiu will become a much better rider if yi go down that route.

Oh and one other thing if I may, one of my neighbours got an R1 fir his first bike, it was back in 2008 the bike has done about 1,000 miles in all that time, it's now a beautiful ornament in his conservatory, he won't ride it as it scares him, on the other hand he loves his mto6 ......

I also know of a guy who bought his first r1 in 2007 he got the same 4c8 as me, the following week it was back in the dealers fjr sale, apparently his riding style was to have the throttle pinned all the time, when he tried it on the R1 it scared him sh!tless so he sold it, he said it was way too fast.....

So please please fir yiur sake and yiur familes sake, think this one through long and hard and make yiur decision from the head not the heart

Best wishes and ride safe whatever you choose, oh and don't be a stranger on here, it's not compulsory that yiu have to own an R1 ... At the end of the day a bike is a bike....... Unless it's a honda

If you're gonna go for the R1 then I hope you're not a speed demon cos as the guys above have clearly pointed out its one hell of a crazy machine, if you can hold back and be sensible then go for it, I'm sure that 95% of the guys on here get on the R1 and think I'll be good today, only problem is about 5 minutes later that thought goes out the window [emoji15]

Hi Alan , sorry bud but I've gotta side with the sensible brigade on this one, however with a twist ;) why not have a year or two on an R6 - still quick as fook and plenty of upgrading options if ur into that + in a year or two u could always either chop it in fer the 'R1 of yer dreams' or if you fancied it maybe track it and still get yerself that R1 you desire- whatever you choose to do pal - remember advice on here is always genuine(peeps don't know you personally but want anyone they can 'help' learn from their experience or mistakes) once again good luck ;)

Lol - Bub , I wonder how many last 5 mins- I let mine warm up to temperature before I ride so that she can be 'caned' almost immediately lol ;) ;)

I'm willing to bet its a similar tale for a good few in here :) :)

Welcome in Alan
Dirt bikes hey ! CR 500 now there's an insaine bike if ever there was one , you never thought about putting that on the road ?
The Dirt bikes depending on your ability will have prepaird you some what for the lunacy of the R1 but remember where your Dirt bike is in top gear on a 4c8 you'll be hooking up into second gear !
the sv may be a tad sedate for you but will be good for a years experience or so & the R6 not a bad compromise , the 4c8 can be ridden sedately but watch out for the devil on your shoulder as the bikes also a fucking beast !
