Hi Folks
Hi everybody,
I've just returned to the Yamaha fold after a ten year absence, picking up a 4XV from 2000 with 29k on the clock. She's a bit of a shed at the moment having been a commuter hack with cracked/badly painted plastics and forks/mudguard from a 2003 model with the anodised black lowers. She sounds smooth enough when running but badly needs TLC to return her to her original condition. First to go is the minging iridium double bubble.
Plans are to source the correct forks ( then eBay the wrong ones), get the WP rear shock rebuilt, powder coat the corroded wheels and get the plastics welded and painted. She's in the popular red/black/white colour scheme. Should be a nice project for the next 6 months and then be a keeper once finished. She must be one of the last 4XV's before the 5JJ were introduced in 2000.
I'll probably be found lurking in the 4XV section or asking stupid newbie questions. Thanks in advance for any help offered.
I'm in Fareham, Hampshire by the way.

Re: Hi Folks
Welcome in Adam
How about a set of chinese fairings ? £350-400
heres the standard early R1 newbie reply for you & how about starting a thread in the projects section with plenty of pics ?
Those 5jj's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 4xv like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Make sure you look in the 4xv & 5jj sections .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems , the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .
http://www.partzilla.com can be helpful for online parts micro fiches for getting part numbers & checking prices in the states you can then enter the partnumber into O.E.M part search on places like http://www.wemoto.com
enjoy
