strange blue thing.
Hi everyone.
I have recently acquired my late brothers 99 R1.
I'm about to do an oil change, but I'm stumped by the oil filter.
The filter seems to be sitting on an anodized blue spacer about 15 mm thick & not directly onto the block.
It's not one of those sandwich plate adapter's things as there's no pipes or anything going into it.
It's just a spacer which has brought the filter to within less than 8 mm of the exhaust & I ain't sure if there's enough room to remove the filter without removing exhaust.
I have a pic but don't know how to upload anything at the mo..
Has anyone got any clue as to what it is????

Re: strange blue thing.
I'm clueless but can help you with a pic upload.
1. Just create a photobucket or an Imgur account.
2. Upload photo from your phone or camera to that. Copy and paste the generated [IMG] link to the message you created.
I'm just unfamiliar with the problem but I bet one of these older cooters here can help ya. Welcome to the forum btw!!!!

Re: strange blue thing.
It must be a type of oil cooler or an adapter to accept a non standard filter.

I can't imagine it being a non standard oil filter adapter. Would be easier to buy the right filter.blake7 wrote:It must be a type of oil cooler or an adapter to accept a non standard filter.
The oil cooler thing sound plausible, but if there were such a thing that looked like my one, Google would have found an image of it by now!

Welcome to the forum and good luck in finding out what the spacer is and removing the filter

Welcome in Andrew
There's a few things a you need to know about the 4xv , I've never seen the anodized bit your on about but if I remember I'll take a pic of mine for you tonight . The standard oil filter part number 303 so if you buy a K&n it's KN 303 or High Flow is HF 303

I'm waiting for a drain bolt washer to arrive before I actually find out what this thing is.

Here's a link to a 4xv oil cooler...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-YZF-R1 ... SwKrhVZefw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Obviously there should be two coolant lines connected to it, so if not, is there a couple of blanked off hoses you can see anywhere?
Has someone plumbed in a oil cooler radiator instead maybe?
Edit, just been looking at some images and it appears the oil cooler sits next to the oil filter bolted to the block.

It looks like an adapter for an oil cooler. What's on the other end of the hose?

The hose in that pic is just a breather hose & nothing to do with it.Moise wrote:It looks like an adapter for an oil cooler. What's on the other end of the hose?

I just mentioned to petepassion that the oil cooler is next to the filter as it should be.
No this thing has no pipes or blanked off bits on it.
It just seems like a stupid spacer which may prevent replacing the filter without exhaust removal.

Here's the engine in my bike & my spare ( both 5jj but more or less the same as 4xv )

As opposed to where your oil filter screws on

Heres a link to the exhaust gaskets i use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-YZF-R1 ... Sw7ThUeF-H
If you want your pictures to be visible on the forum so that people don't have to click on the links then heres 3 ways to post pics
""get yourself a free photobucket account & follow the idiots guide to posting pics from your pc
posting.php?mode=reply&f=6&t=10659
if you don't want to open a photobucket account then an alternative is go to
http://tinypic.com/
1 - "choose file" and browse to the image you wish to upload from your PC
2 - In the "resize" drop down choose either 15" or 17" screen (15 is enough and fast too)
3 - Press "upload now" where it will ask you to type in a couple of words to confirm you are a human being and not an automated program.
4 - Once done copy the text from the "IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards" field
5 - Then just paste it exactly as is in to your message.
or you can post direct from your not so smart phone using tapawank (tapatalk) it's great for posting pic's & notifications but wank for viewing the forum

I didn't realize it was American.
It ain't helped yet though as no one knows what it is.
I think I put 98 R1 on the other one. Well it was made in 98, registered 99.

But I'm pretty good at looking for stuff on the web & I couldn't believe I found zero reference to anything that looked like the thing that's on me bike.
I don't know how far the filter unscrews before it comes away from the thread, but I ain't got much room between it & the exhaust.

What a total ballache and what a total waste of time if it is them magnet type things, id try an old fashioned chain wrench on that and turn the filter off , if the filter moves then get that thing off and chuck it in ra bin,if its trapped by exhaust then you've no choice then but tae drop the exhaust off, I'm fraid its one of em jobs , you gotta suck it and see, cant say ive ever seen anything like that before though, good luck!!

I couldn't find anything either. You'll probably find out what it's for when you take the filter off. It doesn't unscrew very far before you can remove it.Andraki0190 wrote:I reckon your right.2002r1jon wrote:I reckon that's a magnet to pick up any metallic foreign objects in your oil
