Hello all. Thought I would join this site as I have recently bought a 99 R1 on an 03 plate. Having had a 4 year absence from owning a bike I got the bug again and seen this beauty an fell hook line and sinker. I do have a few questions if anyone can help in any way.
The bike handles and rides very well but I have heard that fitting a steering dampner takes away the slight running wide feeling it gives from the front end....that and obviously its needing sticky tyres as the set on it are more of an all weather tyre...I am thinking on pirelli corsa 3's....that is only due to me always having pirellis on previous bikes mainly a suzuki gsxr 750.
The power deliver on this bike is nothing short of awesome...so I dnt need any help ther.
Other couple of wee issues are it needs a new nose fairing as the one on it has had a crack and a bad repair so I would like to source a new one for that....wer is best to get that.
The bike has a real nice tail tidy with nice led tail lights and indicators of which I have been trying to source a replacement buld for the tail lights...with no joy...ive put a photo ov the type needed if anyone has seen them before, also I have put a photo ov a buld I did source so it shows the difference between the one that fits (on left)
The seat cowel is nice but its a bit rattley and isnt flush fitting as I wld like...any options out there.

Hi Alan welcome ,easiest way to get photos on here is to use the tapatalk app ,few of the lads have bought fairing kits from China ,with good reviews check " triggers broom " three for one

As far as i'm aware the steering damper is to stop the R1 from shaking it's head and the "run wide " feeling is something else .

Hi Alan, welcome to the forum.
With regards to the running wide issue, I think it's been mentioned on here about fitting the later top amd bottom yokes...possibly the 5pw, but don't take my word for it, maybe soneone will chip in shortly or just have a search on the forum.

Welcome to the forum Alan and good luck in sorting the running wide problem. Now I'm not at all technical but I have had some of my previous R1's running wide, I got the suspension set up and that sorted the problem, what they did was twiddle at the front and rear, that's the limit if my technical ability, they firmed the suspension up and the bike held its line.

Welcome, good to have another 4xv owner on board. Looking forward to some photos.

The running wide could be the tyres. But I'd suggest that you make notes of the suspension settings, then put everything to standard as a starting point, including the fork height in the triple clamps. You may need more preload though depending on your weight.

As others have said, a steering damper won't help.

"Those 4xv's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 5jj like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Make sure you look in the 4xv & 5jj sections .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems , the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .
